Intermoor began operating out of Montrose Port around a decade ago, and has used crane, personnel and plant hire from Whyte Cargo since day one at the port. Its UKs General Manager, Frank Burns, oversees the business’s UK operations from its Aberdeen head office. He spoke to us about why a business like Intermoor can rely on Whyte Cargo for quayside support.
Reducing Risk in All Aspects
As a business that deals with massive equipment (think 15-tonne anchors and 50-tonne reels of chain) Intermoor is reliant on cranes that can handle very heavy loads. But it’s more than just sheer strength that they look for in a crane. The lifting equipment must also be up to date, of good quality and be offered at a fair price. After all, one faulty crane can cause costly downtime, as well as a risk to the safety of staff and inventory. The reliability of Whyte Cargo’s quality cranes assures the Intermoor team that they’re always in safe hands.

Safety is also paramount to Intermoor’s operations. With heavy machinery, huge equipment and fast-paced quayside work, there are obvious safety risks involved in their day-to-day business. Knowing that Whyte Cargo follows the correct safety protocols is a huge factor – in fact, Frank says it is the first thing that the team at Intermoor need to think of when making any decisions.
Service you can rely on
By nature, Intermoor’s work is highly reactive, and at any time they may require an outcall for a crane or personnel. Thankfully, Whyte Cargo is always on hand to help. The Intermoor team can call at any time and know that someone will be there to answer and that the equipment or people they require will be ready when they need them. In this industry, reliability is a huge factor, and Frank says that “no matter what the length of time we’ve given Whyte’s notice of a job, they’re very, very reliable.”
The Right People on The Ground
Frank started his own career as a yard hand on ship yards nearly 30 years ago. As someone who has been “on the ground”, and is now shaping and leading the business, he values this quality in Whyte Cargo’s Commercial Director, Daniel Whyte.
Intermoor has worked with Whyte Cargo since Daniel was helping to load the boats, offload the boats, split anchors and build anchors. Since making the transition into management, Daniel is uniquely positioned to understand the pressures of the industry as well as the factors that can affect his staff at the quayside. Frank thinks this can only be a good thing – it makes him more well rounded, and strengthens the position of Whyte Cargo as a whole.
It’s also essential that Intermoor has the right people working at Montrose Port, and they often use quayside supervisors from Whyte Cargo. Frank admits that the team on the ground have very high standards – but they’ve never had a bad word to say about the service they receive at the port. Based on feedback from his quayside team, Frank says the Whyte Cargo crew are strong, capable, adaptable, and willing to go the extra mile when needed.
A Reliable Quayside Partnership
Day-to-day, the relationship between Intermoor and Whyte Cargo runs smoothly. The Intermoor team know that they can rely on Whyte Cargo to support their quayside operations, and Frank has an open, honest relationship with Daniel Whyte, who is always easy to approach. This partnership highlights the importance of having the right people and equipment on the ground, and how expertise at every level of quayside operations positively impacts the whole business.
