If you work in the construction, marine or industrial sector in Scotland and need heavy equipment, machinery or cargo moved, then you might need to hire a crane. No matter where you are, whether that’s at one of our partner ports in Montrose, Peterhead or Aberdeen, or if you’re further afield throughout the UK, we’re here to help with responsive, flexible crane hire. But you may be wondering: what does that actually involve?
When you hire a crane from Whyte Cargo, you don’t just get a crane. Alongside a high-quality Liebherr crane, you get a qualified operator, a lift supervisor and slinger signallers, as well as full lift planning, risk assessments, certification and insurance. In this blog we break down what to expect when you hire a crane from us, step by step.

What is included in Crane Hire ?
Stage One: Getting Started – What we need to know
The first step to hiring a crane from Whyte Cargo is to reach out to our friendly team. You can contact us by phone or by email, but either way you can expect a quick response 24 hours of the day, 365 days a year.
If you’ve worked with us before then you’ll know what to expect, and so will we. But if this is your first time reaching out to Whyte Cargo we’ll need to know a little bit more about the nature of the job before we get started so that we can plan it appropriately and get all of the right processes in place. At a minimum, it’s essential that we know:
What you need moved: Tell us what we’re dealing with, including the size, weight, and any other necessary information – for example, are there additional risks involved in handling your cargo?
When you need it moved: Are you working on a strict timescale or are you more flexible? We’re used to working in the fast-moving shipping industry, and we can mobilise for our quayside clients in less than 30 minutes.
Where you need us to be: No matter if you’re transporting cargo at one of our bases in Montrose or Aberdeen, or you need us to travel to you – we can help you at the location you need us to.
Stage Two: Planning Your Lift Safely & Efficiently
We don’t just provide cranes, we provide a complete cargo handling service, and that includes the planning phase that ensures everything is handled efficiently, safely and in line with the correct protocols.
Once we know the necessary information about your cargo our team will plan your lift, selecting the most appropriate equipment from our range of Liebherr cranes as well as our plant machinery if needed.

Moving something awkward? Don’t worry, our team is experienced in complex and specialist lifts, moving everything from steelwork and machinery to grand pianos and gym equipment. These lifts require extra planning and care, but we’ll work with you to ensure everything is planned out and ready to go smoothly.
Crane hire from Whyte Cargo also ensures that your lift is carried out safely by experienced operators. We always undertake a thorough risk assessment and make sure that our cranes and personnel have all of the right insurance, training and certifications to ensure maximum adherence to safety standards during your lift. Our dedication to safety reduces the risk of damage to our clients’ cargo and ensures compliance with relevant regulations.
Stage Three: What Happens on Lift Day
With everything planned out, we’ll arrive with our equipment, ready to do your lift at the scheduled time and location. We’re not just bringing a crane – a team of experienced operators, lift supervisors and slinger signallers will be on hand to make sure your cargo is rigged, lifted and loaded safely and securely.
Our team is all about mucking in to get the job done, and they’ll make sure your cargo is in safe and efficient hands.
Stage Four: What Happens after the Crane Lift?
Once your cargo is loaded, we can assist you with the next steps. If you need it unloaded at an onward location, or require warehousing in Montrose, we’re here to help. We have three warehouses available for rent in Montrose, with two at the quayside and one centrally located at Broomfield Industrial Estate. Just let us know if you require any warehouse space or additional cargo handling assistance and we can discuss this with you.
